The Canary Islands – Destination Spain

The Canary Islands offer the same type of resorts as any other beach destination, but what really stand out are the tiny fishing villages, whitewashed hilltop hamlets and a few wild places located an earshot away from the volcano. Compared to mainland Spain the Canaries are definitely cooler all year long.

December to March are the coolest months and also the busiest for the travel business. The Carnival period is really the time to visit the Canaries if one is looking for fun and frolic mixed with the natural ethereal beauty offered by the islands. The Carnival lasts from February to March and finding an accommodation during this period can definitely be a problem due to the rising hotel prices. The cheapest airfares are available between November to mid-December and even lower from April to May.

The Canary Islands are situated 1000 kilometers off the coast of North Africa. Some popular resorts in the Canary Islands are located in the town of Puerto de la Cruz, in the south of Tenerife and Puerto Del Carmen near Lenzarote. The Gran Canaria rolling sand dunes of Maspalomas shouldn’t be ignored by any beach lover.

The main attraction for any Canary visitor is definitely the Teide volcano on Tenerife which is highest mountain in Spain and also third biggest volcano on Earth. Located 3718 meters above sea level it is also the highest mountain in any Atlantic mountain. The volcano is surrounded by the Parque Nacional del Teide national park which can be accessed by a public road running from the northeast to southwest of the mountain. Access to the summit is not allowed unless a free permit is allowed by the Park Office for the last 200 meters. Four national parks, out of the total thirteen present in Spain, are located in the Canary Islands.
